Summary0000435: Crash when lauching VCMI client

I can't launch the game because of an error with 3DOLOGO.smk.

Strange. When starting the game, VCMI extracts 3DOLOGO.SMK into its folder and opens it to play intro. Here it seems to be unable to do so.

Please, tell if the 3DOLOGO.SMK file is present in VCMI folder at the moment of (after) crash?

Yes the file is in the folder.

But what you told gave me an idee.
The file is right here but maybe the game couldn't read it.
I'm on Microsoft Windows Seven so I just launch the VCMI client with admistrator rights and it works!

I have Windows 7 Pro and I don't need to have Admin rights to run VCMI 0.8 - either you have a different version of Windows 7 or there's something else weird going on. ;-)

Best regards,
Steven.

Same here...
That's strange. If VCMI has enough rights to create the file, it's should be also able to open and read it.

I think it depends WHERE vcmi/heroes3 is installed
since vista it's a general good idea to install games outside "Program Files" directory on system disk/partition

so i think Linuks didn't use this rule, or looking at his name, he did strange things with WINE or DARWINE

Well I installed it on Windows Seven 64bits and not Linux ;p
It's in Program Files (x86) and I just see that Heroes III without VCMI also needed to start as admin (for features like autosave).
So this is not a VCMI problem ;)

I think it is a good idea not to install any games in the standard Windows-defined heirarchy, including the 32 or 64 bit Program Files directories. Editing and updating Fall from Heaven 2 (a mod for Civilization 4) is also much less prone to problems when you create a new base directory for its files (my base directory for most programs and games is "\Win 7 Program Files\" for example =). So you might want to try something like that out to avoid problems with certain games and programs in the future. ;-)

I am closing issue.
VCMI, like H3, requires privilege to create and write files within its folder.
