Should this field always used when closing obviously old issues?
I just go through every open issue since 2009 to find something I can help with and closed few that was fixed already.

Yes. This field should be always used, so all resolved issues will be in changelog.

Ok so what's should be valid input for FixedInVersion if issue clearly resolved in earlier version?

For example this issue about spellbook fixed before 0.96 (or even 0.95 or earlier as far as I remember). And even if I bisect where it's fixed (is it needed?) I still can't set prior version anyway.

Should I just set it as fixed in 0.next?

The reason is that adding issues to to already released versions doe not make sense. We are using only 0.next.
