The stack queue disappears if a stack is going to kill the last enemy remaining, from the moment the stack starts walking towards the target.
See screenshot link in report 0000184: my Crystal Dragon just started walking towards the Pikeman, and the stack queue disappeared completely.

I believe this has been fixed by changes in animation system made in 0.84.
